NEW DELHI: In the wake of three more cheating cases involving Rs 1265 crores surfacing against them, a Special CBI court has dismissed the bail plea of two directors of a Bhojpuri TV channel, arrested by the CBI for allegedly using forged documents to procure loans from three nationalised banks and cheating them over Rs 203 crores.
Refusing to grant the relief to P K Tewari and Anand Tewari, Directors of Mahuaa Media Private Limited, Special CBI Judge Swarna Kanta Sharma said, In the present time when corruption is eating into the vitals of this country and the money of the exchequer is being lost in such frauds, taking a lenient view will amount to working contrary to one s conscious and against the well being of economy of out country as well as the society. In such circumstance when the amount of cheating involves more than Rs 1468 crores, I do not find it a fit case for grant of bail .
The court s order came after the CBI told the judge that investigation was going on in three other similar cases of alleged cheating by them and amount of cheating involved this time was Rs 1265 crores. The CBI said that if enlarged on bail, the accused could not only influence the investigation but also the witnesses and evidence against them .
Accepting the CBI s contention, the court said, In cases of this nature where the amount of cheting is of about Rs 1468 crores of the exchequer s money with active connivance of the bank officials since it could not have been possible without their connivance to grant loan on the basis of fabricated documents .
Acting on the complaint of the banks, the CBI had arrested directors PK Tewari and Anand Tewari in july 2012 for allegedly producing fake invoices and Chartered Accountant certificates to secure Rs 34 crore loan from each one of three banks, sources said.
The case was registered by the agency in January 2012 on complaint from Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank and Union Bank of India which were allegedly cheated by the directors, they said.
