NEW DELHI: West Delhi will soon be home to the biggest surface level parking lot in the capital. North Delhi Municipal Corporation is planning to turn the area over the Kirti Nagar-Ramesh Nagar drain into a 3km long car park capable of accommodating over 8,000 cars. Almost 70% of the drain covering work is complete, claim corporation officials.
The facility will ease the parking woes of west Delhi. Parking is a huge problem in the city. Since we dona t have many options for parking sites because of the space crunch, it will be wise to turn the area above the drain into a surface level parking. The corporation wona t have to spend anything as no further construction is required. The car park will only bring in more revenue. The road above the drain is being constructed using AA plus design, a technology that will ensure that it is thick enough to bear the load of heavy vehicles like buses and trucks. The car park will be built on the lines of the parking lot that came up above the drain near Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium during Commonwealth Games where buses are stationed,a? said Ravinder Gupta, chairman, works committee, North corporation.
However, officials of the corporationa s remunerative project (RP) cell feel the car park could add to the existing chaos instead of putting an end to it. a We have received the proposal for the feasibility study. But the project isna t practicable. The 3km long parking lot needs to have entry and exit points at regular intervals. And there is a road running parallel to the drain. If we go ahead with the proposal, then traffic movement will be disrupted on the road, resulting in chaosa?, said an RP Cell official.
Almost 70% of the work on the drain is complete. It is expected to be ready by the year end. a Converting the space into a parking lot will not take time but we need to figure out whether the car park will serve the purpose or nota?, he said.
