"We are probing the personal enmity angle as robbery so far seems improbable for the simple reason that the family had a hand-to-mouth existence,'' said a source.
The victims were Swarna Kaur (78) and her daughter Balbir Kaur (53). "The fire was reported around 3.42pm on Tuesday afternoon. Neighbours called up the police control room after which two fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The blaze was brought under control in half an hour," said a fire brigade officer.
Additional CP (west) V Renganathan said circumstantial evidence point towards murder.
"Postmortem has been done and the viscera preserved. Besides the exact time of death, the report will point to the nature of injuries the women sustained. We will need to wait for a few days for this report to ascertain if our investigation is on the right track," said Renganathan. He added that the bodies were charred beyond recognition, yet the fire didn't affect anything else in the room.
Police said the two sons were not in the house when the fire broke out and that they are being closely questioned. "Balbir and another family member were suffering from some mental illness because of which they limited their interaction with neighbours to a bare minimum. This is proving a big hindrance in the probe," said an officer.
Swarna had lost her husband few years ago and had been staying with her unmarried daughter Balbir and two sons Devender Singh (42) and Dayal Singh (40). Both Devender and Dayal are associated with the Rajouri Garden gurdwara.
