The commissioner of East corporation, S S Yadav, told TOI that the building had been "booked" and several notices were sent to the property owner - the last one was sent on December 5 - for stopping the construction. He said the corporation was planning to take demolition action this weekend but the building collapsed before that.
"In a rush to complete the structure, the contractor removed the shutters supporting the newly laid roof. As a result, the roof collapsed bringing down the entire building with it. We were planning to take action against the structure and a request had been sent to the local police," said Yadav.
The corporation officials have now razed the remaining structure and sealed the property. The residents want stringent action to be taken against the guilty. "Last week, a building collapsed in Jheel Khurenja and the contractor is still at large. This case is no different. The contractors who put people's lives at risk by using cheap and substandard materials should be arrested. The building was bound to collapse. We want the four injured labourers, admitted at Swami Dayanand Hospital, to be compensated by the civic agency," said Mira Sabharwal, president, Geeta Colony RWA.
As there are only 12 junior engineers to look after 64 wards, the corporation has decided to recruit more engineers on contract basis to check illegal construction. "Staff crunch has been a problem since the trifurcation. We have asked for additional manpower many times, to no avail. To prevent similar incidents, we plan to recruit over 40 engineers on contract," said Mehek Singh, chairman, standing committee, East corporation.
