NEW DELHI: Fourteen child labourers were rescued recently in a joint raid conducted by government officials and NGOs Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), Child Line and Prayas in Jahangirpuri area of Delhi. The children, reportedly working in a bangle-making industry, are said to belong to the age group of 6-15 years. The rescue operation was led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate of the area Rajinder Gupta, accompanied by police, members of Labour Department and NGOs.
Officials of BBA said that most of the rescued children belong to villages of Bihar and had been working in the factory for a period of 6-10 months. "The children were working in extremely unhealthy conditions and were involved in hazardous activities at work. They usually used to work 14-18 hours a day," said Rakesh Senger of BBA.
According to a press release by the organisation, six-year-old Manish (name changed) said, "I work from 9 am in the morning till 11 pm in the night without a break. Although I was promised a monthly salary of Rs. 3000, I have not been paid anything till now."
The release also quoted 10-year-old Raju (name changed) said, "I came to visit Delhi a few months back with my father but I was made to work in this factory against my wish. I do not want to work and want to go to the school."
RS Chaurasia, chairperson of BBA said, "Children in large numbers are working in organized industrial sectors in Delhi. We welcome the orders of the High Court for prosecution of employers and recovery of back wages for the children."
