Up in the hills, Shimla and Manali received the first snowfall of the season and the weatherman predicted the wet weather would continue in many places of north India till December 18. Light to moderate fog is likely to form over Delhi from Tuesday night and visibility is expected to be low in the morning.
In the capital, rain started early in the morning and continued till afternoon, bringing chill in the air. The maximum temperature settled at 18.7 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal, and eight degrees less than Monday's high. At several stations in the capital the difference between the maximum and minimum temperature was less than three degrees.
Night temperature likely to dip after wet spell ends
"Trace rain was recorded till 8.30am and another 2mm between then and 5.30pm. A western disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir caused the rain and snow in the region," said a Met official.
Once the WD moves away, the minimum temperature, which on Tuesday was 11.5 degrees Celsius - three degrees above normal - is expected to fall by a couple of degrees due to colder winds blowing in from the hills. Met officials said another WD was expected on December 13, which meant that the hills would continue getting rain and snow till at least December 18. Some places in the plains of northwest India, adjoining central India and the east would also get rain in the same duration.
"The minimum temperature was on the higher side because the overcast conditions did not allow the earth's heat to escape. On the other hand, the day was much cooler because there was no sunshine. Due to the presence of moisture and expected drop in temperatures shortly, we are expecting light to moderate fog over Delhi and nearby areas from Tuesday night," said a Met official.
The Ridge recorded the highest rainfall on Tuesday with 7.5 mm between 8.30am and 5.30pm, followed by Delhi University and Pitampura with 5mm each. Pitampura recorded a maximum temperature of 16.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 14.1 degrees. Ridge saw the maximum drop to 17.4 degrees Celsius while its minimum was 14.8 degrees Celsius.
"With another WD expected on Thursday, rain and snow are likely over many places in the western Himalayan region. Heavy snow, equivalent to 3cm rainfall, is also possible in some areas. Rain and thundershowers are possible over a few places in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh and north Rajasthan. This kind of weather will continue till December 18," said a Met official.
