NEW DELHI: The Directorate of Education has issued a circular reiterating that children with HIV/AIDS should not be denied admission on that basis if they are otherwise eligible.

The directive, issued "with the concurrence of Health and Family Welfare Department and Law and Justice Department," says, "No child affected by HIV/AIDS is denied admission if otherwise eligible for admission to any class in the school" .

The circular, title "No discrimination against children suffering from HIV/AIDS", further says that "the identity of such [a] child should be kept confidential so that the child is not discriminated [against] in any way in the school" and that "such a child should be given all the benefits for which he/she is eligible as a normal child."

Though the circular mentions the disadvantaged category -- which includes students from SC/ST/OBC backgrouds or kids who are differently-abled or orphaned -- children with HIV/AIDS are not included in this category in Delhi.
