Satpal Singh wasn't happy about the marriage of Ashok Kumar to his daughter Seema. He had been nursing a grudge since 2009. He allegedly hired his nephew Neeraj Kanwar for Rs 2 lakh to kill Kumar and paid him Rs 50,000 as advance, police said.
Apart from Singh, Kanwar (41), Dinesh Kumar (42), Amit Gupta (33), Punit (20) and Ankit Sharma (22) were arrested. An i-10 and a motorcycle, which were used in the crime, have been seized apart from a country-made pistol, two knives and an air pistol, said DCP (southwest) A K Ojha.
A senior police officer said Kumar and Seema had an inter-caste marriage against their families' wishes. Seema's family seemed to have accepted the marriage after a while, especially after a girl was born to the couple; but Singh had issues with Kumar.
Police said Singh and others had closely monitored Kumar's daily routine and found that he used to travel towards Sagarpur railway crossing, between Delhi Cantonment and Palam, every morning. On January 16, Kumar was shot dead while he was on his way home after dropping his wife at work.
Cops interrogated Kumar's in-laws suspecting honour killing. They gave conflicting versions that didn't match with the circumstantial evidence. Police then obtained call records of the suspects. The needle of suspicion pointed towards Singh.
On Saturday, SHO Sagarpur received information that Singh would come to meet the killers at Sagarpur. He was arrested and later confessed.
Police are now probing if the killers had tried to bump off Kumar on December 25. "That day, the accused had barged into Kumar's house and asked him to accompany them to sort out some issues. But Kumar insisted that they talked there. When they didn't budge, he threatened to call up the police, after which the men had fled," said an officer.
