No respite from cold till Monday: Meteorological department

NEW DELHI: The maximum temperature dipped once again in Delhi, going down eight degrees below normal to settle at 12.6 degrees Celsius. Met officials said this was a result of cold northerly winds blowing over northwest India and despite a slightly sunny afternoon, the maximum temperature remained on the lower side.

The minimum did not change significantly from Friday. It was 2.9 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal. Met officials have said Sunday's weather will not be different from Saturday's and maximum and minimum will be around 13 degrees and 3 degrees respectively.

"Even though there was sunlight on Saturday, cold winds cut out any rise in temperatures. Similar conditions will prevail on Sunday. The wind is expected to weaken from Monday and the effective cold will reduce. Both the maximum and minimum temperatures should also start rising. For the next week or so, fog will remain only in the early morning," said a Met official.

Even though temperature is sufficiently low and there is plenty of moisture in the atmosphere, fog is setting in only during the very early morning hours and dissipating by 10 am. "The wind will calm down by Monday. We are still not expecting the fog to intensify since the level of moisture needed for fog formation would have also reduced by then. Westerly winds will pick up by the middle of next week preventing fog during the day," said a Met official

The maximum temperature in Delhi ranged between 8.6 degrees at Mungeshpur to 13.6 degrees at Lodhi Road. The minimum temperature fell to a low of 1 degree at Jafarpur and was the highest in Pitampura at 4.4 degrees Celsius. Very dense fog conditions prevailed at the airport between 2.30 am and 4.30 am when general visibility fell below 50 m. The new runway could not be used during this period. The department said that the cold will continue over Punjab, Haryana, UP and Bihar for the next two days and dense fog will abate from these regions from Monday.
