NEW DELHI: The Delhi government failed to provide proper lodging facilities to 9,000 participants of 58th National School Games that commenced in the city on January 2.

Team leaders of various states complained to the education department against the poor condition of accommodation . Despite chilling cold, they were made to stay in classrooms which had broken or missing window panes. They also complained of non-availability of hot water and drinking water. Around Rs one crore was spent on the event.

Education minister Kiran Walia on Monday issued orders to education department to fix responsibility for the mismanagement. She also asked PWD engineers to visit the schools and rectify the problem. The games, however, concluded on Tuesday . "I am upset as this problem could have been addressed by the school principals on their own on by using Vidyalaya Kalyan Samiti fund," said Walia. She also suggested that the games be held during some other break as Delhi is "biting cold" in January.
