Women abused in corporation meet

NEW DELHI: Women leaders may have come to power but it seems they are unsafe even inside government institutions just like anyone else on the streets. Reserving half of the municipal corporation seats for women was a move to empower them, but it has turned out that getting more female councillors will not make their counterparts accept them as equal.

In the House meeting of North corporation on Monday, when there was an uproar over the inauguration of a road-under bridge (RUB), one of the Congress councillors threatened and threw empty water bottles at some of the BJP women councillors sitting in the front row to silence them.

BJP women councillors allege that they were harassed and a complaint was lodged in LG office. From now on, 10 marshals will be deployed in the meeting hall for the safety of women. "While protesting against the inauguration of the RUB, Devender Singh Poni, Bawana councillor, snatched away mike from our seat and when we objected, he threw empty bottles at us. On one hand, these councillors talk about changing the mindset of the people to make women safe in the city in public gatherings, and on the other they do such things," said Poornima Vidyarthi, BJP councillor who was allegedly harassed.

After the incident, all BJP women councillors walked out of the meeting and sat on the floor outside the hall demanding suspension of Devender Singh. As the Mayor does not have the power to suspend, the meeting had to be adjourned.

Mayor Mira Aggarwal claimed to have asked the commissioner four times during the meeting to take action against the councillor.
