A crumbling girls’ school in Old Delhi has managed a turnaround

NEW DELHI: As you stand outside the crumbling Zeenat Mahal haveli in the crammed locality of Lal Kuan, it is hard to imagine that inside those old walls is a school for 1,000 girls. That's just the first of many surprises in the amazing turnaround story of Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya-2, Zeenat Mahal, a 100-year-old Urdu medium school for girls in Old Delhi.

Till a few years ago, the pass percentage here was as low as 50%. It ranked among the bottom 200 government schools in Delhi.

Most girls here are first-generation learners from Muslim homes. "Many parents did not give the girls time to study. Since most come from extremely poor families, they helped parents with embroidery, kite-making, candle-making and other work," says SKV principal Chitra Gupta, credited with the school's transformation after she took over in 2007.

Gupta took on the challenge. She held a series of open-house meetings with parents and trained teachers to focus on enhancing performance. Students were counselled on the need to do well in studies. With parents' help, teachers saw to it that students had enough time to study.

The results started showing in 2008, when the school achieved a 100% pass record. In 2010, SKV topped among non-Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalayas (RPVV) and stood fifth among all government schools. In 2011 and 2012, too, it bagged good ranks.

Along with academic performance, the other success is significant change in the way the community perceives women's education. Parents now eagerly send daughters to school. Says Rafiqa Begum, whose daughters are in Class IX and X. "I make sure they get all the time to study. I don't ask them to do household chores because I know they are doing something much more important." Such is the pressure for admissions that the number of students has far outnumbered capacity.

Although students are taught in Urdu, they are made fluent in English too. SKV students have won several honours including the Department of Science and Technology-INSPIRE award, Amul Vidyashree Award, an award from MoEF, Indira Award, and the Delhi Parents Council Award.
