NEW DELHI: In a month-long celebration of Indian art, that started on Feb 1 and will go on till March 1, Publica (India's largest public art festival) brings large-scale art installations into the public sphere.

Conceptualised under the theme 'The Spectacle' by Delhi based artist Surbhi Modi, Publica aims to trigger a conversation with installations that are rolled out across Delhi and NCR.

Spread across a mix of outdoor and indoor venues like historical sites, parks, shopping malls and recreational centres, the artworks can be seen in places like the DLF Promenade, India Habitat Centre, Dilli Haat, Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi metro at central secretariat, Garden of Five Senses and the many malls in the capital and NCR. "The venues have been carefully chosen, so that people can engage with art in their comfort zone, thereby re-orienting the notion of art as something meant not just for museums, galleries and art biennales" says Modi who aims to attract lay public in the creative process.

Participating artists include Nandan Ghiya, Shweta Bhattad, Sukanya Ghosh, Sandip Pisalkar, Sheeba Dhanjal, Mangesh Rajguru, S Thirund Vikrant Sharma and Israeli born Achia Anzi as they've focussed on environmentally friendly, socially interactive and community driven artworks. International artists include like Jeremy Hutchison, Saad Qureshi and the Lake Twins.

Some interesting works to look out for come from British artist Jeremy Hutchison as he converts 'sculptural language into linguistic sculpture'. It's a set see-saw piece that playfully critiques how Indians say Kam-Wam, Pani-Wani, Chai-Shai etc. The piece aimed at younger audiences goes live at DLF Promenade and encourages people to interact with it, thereby deepening their engagement.

Also, there's Nandan Ghiya's interactive installation at Select Citywalk, where he creates a photo booth in the mall for personalised work. Others like Mangesh Rajguru's Asan - a double-headed scooter sculpture - talks about global warming in present times and Shweta Bhattad's performance which deals with female abuse and injustice.

Delhi Tourism and UMTC limited run HoHo buses will cover the venues as they ply across the capital's 19+ tourist attractions for the duration of the festival.
