Despite the huge demand for womenonly cabs, such services are still a novelty. The two firms in the field work on a small scale. Sakha Cabs, for instance, started with just one cab and two drivers in 2010. Now, it has 10 drivers and eight cabs, and averages 15 fares a day.
"The highly skewed sex ratio in the 2008 Census report and increasing incidents of violence against women in public spaces made us start the service" says Nayantara Janardhan, COO of Sakha Cabs. Her drivers were counselled about the peculiar challenges they would face in a male bastion, such as finding themselves alone in parking lots with only men around. They also had to deal with prejudice against women drivers. "Statistics show that women drivers cause fewer fatal accidents. But there is still a perception that they are bad drivers," says Nayantara.
Satya, who works with G Cabs, says, "I have no fear. My family initially objected but I told them it's not about gender: there are women pilots also." Still, for the safety of its drivers and passengers, G Cabs has panic buttons in cars.
Sunita Chaudhury (38) also ferries people but in an auto. As Delhi's only woman auto driver for over a decade, she says, "It gives me immense satisfaction to be able to help women."
