NEW DELHI: An RTI activist, who claims to have uncovered a scam in Moti Nagar, alleging that a contractor had not used any iron bar at several points while covering the 3 km-long Ramesh Nagar drain, was on Wednesday morning attacked by four sword-wielding men. The activist, Manoj Saluja, had earlier approached the LG, North Corporation officials and police with videos and photos of the project. He had also posted his findings on Facebook and YouTube. The drain is being covered to create parking space.

Saluja had gone to a temple in the area around 9am and was attacked while returning home. "Four well-built men on a bike came from behind. One of them, wearing a black and white check shirt, hit me on my right knee. I lost balance and then they hit me with a sword on my head. They would have killed me, but by then some residents came out of their houses. I was bleeding profusely and saw my son rushing towards me. After that I fell unconscious," said the 46-year-old activist.

Saluja was rushed to hospital where he received 10 stitches on the left side of his head. The police were called up immediately, he said, but alleges that his statement wasn't recorded. "I had to make several calls to the cops asking them to at least take my statement. It was recorded only after 2 pm and a complaint was registered," he said, wearing a dark grey shirt with bloodstains near the pocket. He added that one of his assailants had dropped his black Blackberry phone on the spot, which was later handed over to the police.

His son and friends say claim he had been receiving threats for almost a month. "He has been getting threats ever since he posted photos and videos on social networking sites. It's not just this drain-covering project, he had in the past complained about other irregularities in projects taken up by the corporation," said his friend, Subodh Wadhwa.

He showed photos of iron bars missing from several concrete slabs and claims to have made a video of the contractor allegedly mixing silt with cement. "The contractor has been using dubious material. Moreover, the structure is unsafe as iron rods are missing from several slabs. We had shot a video of silt being mixed with cement and used to construct the cover of the drain. We had complained to the Karol Bagh zonal officials but it went unheeded. The point is that the drain is covered, it will be used for parking," said Saluja.

Wadhwa, along with Saluja, claims to have given a CD to the North Corporation commissioner, PK Gupta. "They had come to see me when I was on leave. My office received the CD but I'm yet to see the footage. Still, we will send a team to inspect the site on Thursday," said Gupta. The contractor involved claimed that the rods used in the drain had been stolen from the site. "If the contractor and officials are found guilty, strict action will be taken," said Ravinder Gupta, chairman, works committee, North Corporation.
