Metro set for Dwarka test

NEW DELHI: The Metro station to be constructed at Palam may help in decongesting the Dwarka flyover. With over 30,000 vehicles using the flyover during peak hours, there's no escaping the jams here. The proposed Palam station will be located underground, just two metres away from the flyover, right before the slip road veers down to connect with the Manglapuri road. The Metro station is part of the Janakpuri (West)-to Botanical Gardens corridor.

"Work on the station will start in one-and-a-half months," said a DMRC spokesperson. "The station will allow commuters from Dwarka, Palam, Raj Nagar and surrounding areas to directly access south Delhi areas like IIT-Delhi, Hauz Khas, Nehru Place and Kalkaji, all the way to Kalindi Kunj. A large number of commuters who use the Dwarka flyover are expected to switch to the Metro."

Designed to come up 17m under the flyover, the station will have four entry and exit points as well as a parking facility for Metro commuters.

Construction of a tunnel under the existing Dwarka flyover will also prove quite challenging, say Delhi Metro engineers.

"The foundation of the Dwarka flyover goes down deep, more than 20m. However, the station is 17m deep, with the tunnel scheduled to go 11m deep. The tunnel will have to negotiate the underground piers of the flyover," said the spokesperson. In effect, the tunnel will go between the underground piers at distances of 5.58m to 3.49m.

"Since it's a really tight area, construction will be very carefully undertaken here so that no settlement occurs. This will ensure safety of the flyover foundation," said the official.

The tunnel will also go under the railway tracks at Palam railway station. This railway station is operational, with both passenger and goods trains using the tracks. Hence, it's going to pose a challenge.

For the construction work, DMRC has suggested traffic diversions. The diversions, which are yet to be cleared by the traffic police, require a part of the road under the Dwarka flyover to be closed down and the traffic diverted to the Manglapuri road. The impact of the diversions, says Delhi Metro, will not be much.

"This is basically for traffic that uses the road under the flyover. After the diversions, the load on the Manglapuri road will still not be much as we are also widening the roads," added the official. The traffic on this road is mostly of two-wheelers and cars, according to a traffic study done by Metro.
