Over 1.6 lakh candidates set to appear for VIT engineering entrance examination

NEW DELHI: A total of 1,66,978 candidates have registered for VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE) to be held from April 15 to 24, 2013 for admission into the BTech programme offered by Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) University, Vellore.

For the first time the Computer Based Test (CBT) will be organised in 112 cities at 130 centres in India and overseas in Dubai and Kuwait. Of these, 1,35,024 candidates are boys and 31,954 are girls.

According to the founder and chancellor, G Viswanathan, the growing demand for the programme from students based in the Middle-Eastern countries has led VIT University to branch out. Among the prominent centres in India, Andhra Pradesh tops the chart with 33,170 registrations which includes 23,867 males. Second on the list is Uttar Pradesh with 25,692 registrations followed by Bihar with 18,810, Rajasthan with 11,845 and Tamil Nadu with 10,480 registration.

While Delhi has registered 11,728 candidates who will give the entrance examination in its four centres, Chennai has registered 4,804 candidates and Vellore 2,097.

The counseling for admissions will begin from May 13to 18, 2013, with each day divided by the ranks in ascending order. Viswanathan said: "The counseling for those with ranks up to 5,000 will be held on May 13, followed by those with ranks up to 9,000 on May 14."

There are also special scholarship provisions for students. The chancellor said that Central and State board toppers would be awarded a 100% fee waiver for all four years. "VITEEE ranks holders between 1 and 50 will be given 75% fee waiver, while those in the bracket of 51 to 100 will be given 50% and between 101 and 1,000 will be awarded a scholarship to the tune of Rs 95,000," he said.

The Chancellor also added that two class XII toppers among (one boy and one girl) from government schools in rural areas in each district of Tamil Nadu will appearing for VITEEE and secure top marks will be given 100% tuition fee waiver and full exemption from hostel and mess fee under the STAR (Supporting the Advancement of Rural Students) programme. "This effort has been made to ensure that high scorers from each district who have poor economic background get their due and are given the best of education," said Viswanathan. ##
