Police sting blows lid off SIM racket

NEW DELHI: At a time when use of SIM cards obtained on fake IDs by terrorist groups has become a trend, an organized racket of selling SIM cards in bulk has come to fore in the national capital. Three people were arrested from Tri Nagar and around 4,000 SIM cards seized.

The gang sold SIM cards for as little as Rs 10 according to sources. The accused, Sandeep Kumar, Gazanfar Khan and Farman Khan have been booked under various sections of IPC including cheating and forgery.

The police received information that Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Omkar Nagar was selling SIM cards on the basis of forged IDs. "A police officer posing as a customer went to Kumar's office on Friday. Even when he had no ID or photograph, Kumar settled a deal for 700 SIM cards of two service providers and demanded Rs 7,000 in advance. " the Delhi Police FIR said.

During search another 3,280 SIM cards were recovered with 250 forms without stamps. The employees of the service provider may have been involved in the racket, said the police.
