NEW DELHI: A minor fire was reported from the pediatrics wing of Safdarjung Hospital early on Monday morning. The area was evacuated immediately and no casualties were reported.

The fire was detected after smoke was seen coming out of one of the air-conditioners in ward no. 3. Five fire tenders were sent to the spot and the flames were doused within 25 minutes.

According to A K Sharma, head of Delhi Fire Services, the fire brigade was informed at 4.12am. "A team of firefighters was dispatched and 14 new born babies were shifted from the ward. The fire was controlled by 4.40am," he said. Sharma said the plastic of the split AC had caught fire, most likely due to a short circuit.

Police said certain blocks of the hospital complex are yet to receive NOCs from the fire department. "We are trying to ascertain if this ward was one of them. Several fires have been reported at the hospital in the last year with the last one being reported a week ago from the hospital's sub-station," police said.
