NEW DELHI: Getting to Mehrauli could finally become easier. The Delhi government is exploring the possibility of providing better linkages to the area. On Wednesday, chief minister Sheila Dikshit, in a meeting held with senior PWD officials, decided to hire a consultant for the project.

As per the initial plan, elevated roads from two points in the area will be built for better connectivity. At present, there is a single lane of 35 feet to gain entry into Mehrauli. "There is no alternative route available and it takes at least one hour to one-and-a-half hours from Qutub Minar to Mehrauli road due to heavy congestion," said a senior government official. The plan proposes building two separate roads—a 1.2km road from the Mehrauli bus terminus to Mehrauli-Badarpur Road near Anuvrat Marg Ahimsa Sthal and a 1km road from Shahi Idgah to Aruna Asaf Ali Marg via Sanjay Van.

Dikshit, taking note of the difficulties faced by residents and commuters, added that a "tentative" alignment was also discussed in the meeting. Delhi assembly speaker, Yoganand Shastri, who was also present, said PWD has conducted a preliminary survey. Shastri is also the Mehrauli MLA.

If approved, the project will provide relief to commuters using the Mehrauli bus terminal to Mehrauli-Badarpur Road and Idgah to Neela Hauz road. Officials say the entire stretch comes under forest land and permission of forest department is needed before the conceptual stage of the project.
