Ashutosh Dixit, resident of Mandakini Enclave and president of 'The Citizen's Alliance', was the first to start engaging residents in his own colony. He managed to get about 200 petitions signed which were sent to the lieutenant-governor, Tejinder Khanna. Gradually, word spread and other colonies like Godavari, Aravalli and NRI Complex got involved. "We dropped pamphlets saying 'Stop the Mall' in front of houses. On February 24, we held our first meeting with residents which was attended by over 200 people," recalls Dixit.
The alliance has lawyers, architects and economists as members. They used their expertise to probe further. "For instance, one of the architects, Ravi Kaimal, made schematic maps of all commercial hubs in the area to understand how the mall would affect life and mobility," adds Dixit. Economist Laveesh Bhandari analysed how big the mall was going to be and what would be the size of the crowd it would attract by digging out data on commercial establishments and analyzing it. Soon, RWAs from GK-II and C R Park also got involved.
They formed sub-committees and held meetings in their own areas. They started a common group mail, opened a facebook page and even launched an online campaign on change. org. Around 2000 petitions signed online were sent to the LG, urging his intervention. "We downloaded the state level environment clearance from the website which gave us most of the specifications of the mall. Then some of us individually went to the government departments to get more information," said Dixit.
