The teen had been left at Rithala station about 8.30 am by her uncle on the promise that she would go straight to Anand Vihar by Metro where her father, who lives in Loni, Ghaziabad, would pick her up.
The girl, though, fixed up an appointment with her boyfriend at a fast food joint outside Kashmere Gate. When the boyfriend kept her waiting, she realized it would be difficult to explain her delay. She sent three texts to her uncle, father and cousin saying she had been kidnapped from Rithala Metro station by five men.
While her father and other uncle went to the Jyoti Nagar police station to lodge a complaint, the girl decided to end the kidnap story. She boarded the Metro again from Kashmere Gate and returned to Keshavpuram. She walked to a PCR van on Lawrence Road and told them about her escape from her fictitious kidnappers.
"She even switched off her mobile and threw it away to avoid detection," a senior police officer said. Top crime branch officers confirmed the incident. "It was a prank," addl commissioner of police (crime) Ravinder Yadav said.
