According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson, Anuj Dayal, the piece fell down due to ongoing maintenance activities. The large chunk of concrete fell near pier number 441, right next to the Tagore Garden Metro station. Bystanders said that the chunk seemed to have just fallen through, leaving many surprised and shocked. "Fortunately, there was little traffic along the road, so no one was injured," admitted a Delhi Metro official. The DMRC spokesman added that no damage to any Metro pillar or pier has been sustained.
Dayal maintained that the "waste material" was part of the junk cleaned out from the drainage on the top of the pier. "As part of the cleaning process, the manhole on the pier is opened and the central drain of the pier is unclogged and choking is removed. This activity takes place in the night when trains are not running and requires 2-3 nights for completion. In this instance, the work had only been partially done on the first night and some loose material which had not been fully removed fell down during the day time," said Dayal. He added that the rubble would have been removed before completion of cleaning activity.
The incident led to the DMRC chief, Mangu Singh, directing that the person in charge of supervising the work during the night be chargesheeted and taken up for negligence on this account. "He has also directed that the level of supervision for such activities should be raised to avoid re-occurrence of such incidents in the future," added Dayal.
The piece fell down due to ongoing maintenance activities and was waste material, says DMRC spokesperson.
