NEW DELHI: At least 213 people from Delhi, including 31 children, who were in Uttarakhand when the floods hit the Himalayan state on June 16-17, remain missing.

This has been revealed in the latest data of missing persons compiled by the state's disaster management authority . Officials said call records showed that most of those missing were at worsthit Kedarnath and Gaurikund when tragedy struck.

Among them are 29 members of a family from Khanpur Extension in south Delhi who had gone on the Char Dham yatra. Two PhD students of JNU — Aarti Patidar and Gyaniu Umesh Kumar — are also untraceable. "They had left for Kedarnath on June 14," said Om Prakash, a classmate.

91 lost Delhiites found so far

"We are doing everything possible to track any possible survivor. A five-member team is stationed in Uttarakhand to coordinate the rescue operations," said Dharampal, divisional commissioner and principal secretary, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). He said 91 people from Delhi have been rescued so far and one has been identified dead.

Shikha Baluni, a resident of Rampura in Hari Nagar, said seven of her family members were still missing. "My parents, uncle and aunt were last seen on June 20 in Kedarnath by another family," the 23-year-old said. Distraught families hope their dear ones are still stranded in the nearby villages or mountains. As per official data, around a thousand people have died and at least 3000 others are missing after the deluge and landslides that struck Uttarakhand last month.

Several roads have been washed away and more than 700 villages remain cut off in the aftermath of the cloudbursts and massive floods.

Rescue operations involving the Army, Air Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and National Disaster Response Force are still working in some places. "The possibility of any pilgrim stranded in the vicinity of Kedarnath valley surviving till 20 days without being noticed by any of the agencies is remote but we are not losing hope as yet," said an Army official.
