NEW DELHI: An 11-year-old boy was kidnapped on Saturday from near his house in Rajendra Nagar in central Delhi. The family learnt about it when they received the first ransom call soon after. The abductors demanded Rs 1.5 crore. But to their good luck, their ordeal ended within 12 hours due to the alacrity of the cops and a few basic errors made by the kidnappers. Not only was the boy rescued, two of the three kidnappers were also arrested. Much to the horror of the family, one of the kidnappers turned out to be someone they knew.

The boy is the son of a garment businessman. On Saturday evening, he stepped out of his home to buy recharge for his father's cellphone. That's when Harpreet-the father of the boy's classmate-and another person came out of nowhere, shoved him into a Suzuki Swift, and took off.

"On July 6, the police control room received a call at 6.55pm reporting the abduction of a boy by a few unidentified people. A police team rushed to the spot where the mother, Jasvinder Kaur, informed that her son was missing since 6.41pm. The family also said a ransom call came from an unknown cellphone number and that the abductors threatened to kill the boy if their demand was not met," said DCP (central) Alok Kumar.

Police learnt from the family that Harpreet had contacted the family just a week ago to buy a shop. So, Harpreet's family was contacted, too, and police learnt that he had gone out of Delhi for some work.

"The family received two more ransom calls. The kidnappers gave a deadline of 11am on Sunday. The family arranged the money and decided to do as asked," said additional DCP Rajesh Deo, who was handling technical surveillance along with additional DCP Rajeev Sharma.

In the meantime, police traced the caller with the help of technical surveillance to Bhiwadi in Rajasthan. Police worked on this lead and learnt that Harpreet used to go to his friend Harpal Singh Sodhi's office in Bhiwadi.

This office was found out and Sodhi was arrested. He admitted to having made the ransom calls and also guided the cops to the boy, who was at Rewari railway station (Haryana) 25 kilometres away. Harpreet, however, managed to escape, but he left behind his car, which was seized.

Harpreet was arrested on Sunday evening. He told police that he had hatched the plot after learning about the family's move to buy real estate in central Delhi from his wife who was friends with Jasvinder Kaur.
