Babbar's love for cinema of 1950s inspired her to pen Salaam 1950s Ke Naam which will be the first production to be staged on July 18. The musical is a walk down memory lane for those who've grown up watching films of that era as it attracts all kinds of audience from the gen-y to the senior lot.
Interestingly, the play retains the classic black and white colour code on stage keeping with the look of that era's films. While the costumes of the play have been designed by 1950s costume designer Bhanu Athaiya who later won an Oscar for her film work, the poster of this cinematic experience is designed by MF Husain who started his career as film hoarding painter of 1940s-50s.
The play will also stage popular songs from the 50s like Suhana Safar Aur Ye Mausam Haseen, Shola Jo Bhadke, Yaad Kiya Dil Ne Kahan Ho Tum and other evergreen melodies.
Another notable play is Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan to be staged on July 20 at Sriram centre. The play dwells on Mumbai - the city of dreams and its dreamers. As every day, thousands flock to the city to fulfil their 'Bombay dream', the play looks at how Bombay tests them, changes them, challenges them and absorbs them.
Written and directed by Nadira Zaheer Babbar, the play involves the audience into the fluctuating fortunes, vulnerable relations, compromised values and the constant presence of city's force in one's life.
One of the iconic theatre groups Ekjute, was founded by both Nadira and husband, Raj Babbar in 1981. The group has been active for 32 years at the forefront of change, experimentation and quality Hindi theatre in India.
