More than 600 paintings by renowned 18th and 19th century artists such as Thomas Daniell, Tilly Kettle, Frank Brooke, Marshal Claxton, Haris Bert and G Fidies Watt are on display. Seen through the eyes of these foreigners, these paintings offer an outsider's view of the wonder that was India — ghats of Banaras, dancing girls, forts and much more.
These colonial artists were not only experts of oil on canvas but also made several paintings with water colours, ink, pencil, tempera, crayons and poster colours.
Among the most prominent of them was Thomas Daniell, an English landscape painter who spent 10 years in India. Among his more famous paintings are Banaras: Aurangzeb's mosque, Beni Madhava ghat UP, 1813 and Banaras: The Manikarnika Ghat. Looking at these paintings one feels being transported back to the 19th century. They are that real.
Another artist on view is landscape and portrait painter Marshall Claxton, who was born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1811. Claxton's first work was a portrait of his father in 1832. He sold many paintings across the world and came to Calcutta in 1854. His paintings show a greener Calcutta, a time when only horse carriages and carts plied on roads.
London-born Tilly Kettle was the first English painter to work in India. In 1768, he sailed with British East India Company and landed in Madras where he stayed for two years. One of his paintings shows two dancing girls wearing jewels and everyone enjoying their dance. In this expressive and life-like painting, the girls seem to be trying to impress the king.
Anyone is free to enjoy these works of art at NGMA's new wing between 10am and 5pm except on Monday and national holidays.
