Power companies to make details public

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has made it mandatory for all power generation companies to provide their "efficiency and performance standard details" on their websites to improve transparency in the power sector. This would include details like price of fuel, blending ratio of imported coal and domestic coal and copies of bills. They have been asked to upload these details monthly for three months.

A similar order has already been passed by Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). Power purchase cost constitutes more than 80 % of the tariff structure. The tariff is re-structured every three months based on the fuel cost. The move will bring transparency in the power sector.

As per the order, Indraprastha Power Generation Ltd and Pragati Power Corporation Limited will be expected to provide to their beneficiaries (the three discoms) details of — parameters of gross calorific value (GCV) and price of fuel i.e. domestic coal, imported coal, e-auction coal, natural gas, liquid fuel etc.

Power secretary and Chairman GENCO, Shakti Sinha, welcomed the decision however, he said, he is yet to see the order. Members of RWA insist that transparency will only be achieved when DERC passes a similar order for discoms.
