The special genre of Purab Ang Gayaki (eastern style or Benaras gharana) will also have other Thumri singers such as Shruti Sadolikar, Devashish Dey, Dalia Rahut, Dhanashree, Momita Mitra and Kakali Mukherjee.
The fourth edition of the festival to be held at Kamani auditorium is being presented by Sahitya Kala Parishad and Department of Art, Culture & Languages, Government of Delhi.
"Thumri is a beautiful semi-classical music form whose expressions and lyrics can stir your soul. At a time when several art forms are struggling to keep pace with the onset of newer forms of entertainment, thumri keeps alive the traditions of Bhakti poets and still attracts audience. The festival is an effort to give importance to the genre and provide a platform for the singers," says Sinshu Mishra, deputy secretary, Sahitya Kala Parishad.
The opening day will begin with renditions of veteran singer Shruti Sadolikar, Ashwini Bhide and Devashish Dey. The second day will feature Ajay Pohankar of Piya Bawri fame, Dalia Rahut and Dhanashree. The festival will conclude on August 15 with recitals from Pt Channu Lal Mishra, Momita Mitra and Kakali Mukherjee.
Thumri rose to popularity in 19th century Lucknow under the royal patronage of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. Often an expression of the love for Lord Krishna, thumri is a blend of Hindustani classical and elements of folk. The dohas of bhakti poets form the core of thumri songs. With time, a number of lighter forms of the genre like Dadra, Chaiti, Hori, Kajari, Saavan and Jhoola have emerged and thrive today.
