Work on road stalls traffic near Azadpur

NEW DELHI: Work on the elevated road on Ring Road between Azadpur and Prembari Pul started a month back. But with neither any proper planning, nor a diversion, the PWD has started digging the main thoroughfare, leading to major traffic jams even on weekends.

The 1.6-km long elevated road coming up at a cost of Rs 247 crore will reduce traffic congestion on Ring Road at Shalimar Bagh, Ashok Vihar, Pitampura, Wazirpur Industrial Area and Azadpur. But the way it is being executed, traffic jams have become a constant nuisance. "It takes at least three hours to cross the stretch every day. There is a way of carrying out work and the officials aren't following it. They have dug up the road bang in the middle and traffic movement is impossible. At least, an alternate route should have been worked out," said Yoginder Mann, a resident of Azadpur. "On the other side, Delhi Metro is carrying out work and the carriageways can accommodate only a single car."

The scene is no different on weekends. "On Saturday, the road was all blocked and it took us more than an hour to cross a stretch which otherwise takes less than 10 minutes to cross. PWD is carrying out work mindlessly," said Ashok Nagar, a government official.

PWD officials admitted that work had been started without much planning. "It's true that people are facing inconvenience and there is a traffic problem but it is for the benefit of people. We will allow traffic movement on the service lane as well and deploy marshalls," said PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan.

Officials say that with elections nearing, there was immense pressure to start the work. "We were asked to just start the project and it was inaugurated by chief minister Sheila Dikshit. No alternate route or any plan to carry out the work in phases was discussed," said an official, who didn't wish to be quoted. A foot overbridge as well as bus lanes, a cycle track and rainwater harvesting measures are also part of the project.
