NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old US-based NRI was murdered in mysterious circumstances in a southeast Delhi apartment complex in the early hours of Saturday. The incident was reported from South Park Apartments in Kalkaji. The deceased, Anmol Sarna, had several wounds on his head and body and his scull had a fracture. The police found him cowering in fear under a flat, without his shirt, and rushed him to AIIMS but the doctors could not save him. The cause of death has not been ascertained yet and an autopsy will be conducted on Sunday.

Sarna holds a US passport and was to go back next month for further studies. His family had shifted to Delhi in January this year. On Friday night, Anmol and three friends - Shivang Gambhir alias Chikki, Madhav Bhandari and Rhytham - had gone to the flat of a friend, Pranel, for a farewell party around 8pm. Chikki, police said, was to leave for London to pursue his studies on Saturday. The party seems to have set off a chain of events that culminated in the death of Anmol.

DCP, southeast, P Karunakaran said they have found prima facie evidence of drug usage at the party and were going to have Anmol's friends tested. The friends have, cops claimed, told them that Anmol had a "bad trip" after which he became very restless. But they have been giving contradictory statements about Anmol's injuries, blood-splattered cars in the parking and blood in the lane and on a gate of the complex. The cops are studying the twitter account of Anmol in which he has mentioned looking for weed in Toronto, they said.

It was between 10.30pm and 11pm when the residents began waking up on hearing some commotion. A neighbour recalled that one person was standing right under their flat - which is on the third floor - and screaming before slipping into a lane. After a few minutes, Anmol was spotted running around in the lane.

"I had just had dinner and retired for the night. Fifteen minutes later, I heard someone screaming in the lane downstairs and peeped through the window. I saw this man running around without a shirt. He also seemed to be involved in a scuffle with some people," said L R Luthra, criminal lawyer and former RWA president. When the noise got too loud, some of the residents came down and tried to intervene. A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said Anmol was taking names of two of his friends repeatedly.

Anmol finally squatted under a flat. Pranel's father is learnt to have later brought a shirt for him. Police found bloodstains on at least three cars - including a Honda CRV and an SX4 - on the street, on Gate No. 1 and two houses. They said it seemed he was bleeding during the scuffle. Some of the guards who tried to calm him down also hit him in the process, neighbours alleged.

At 11.54pm, Anmol's mother got a missed call from the phone of a friend, Madhav, according to Anmol's family members. When she called back, nobody answered. Around 12.30am, Anmol's mother got a call allegedly from the mother of Pranel. She is alleged to have told her that her son had a stomach infection and that he was being taken to hospital. Anmol was by then bleeding and had several injuries.

The PCR was called around 12.30am. It rushed Anmol to AIIMS where he died during treatment. His body has been preserved for post-mortem. "We found him dead at 1.15am. And we have been since then standing at the police station. We demand the arrest of the people whose house Anmol had visited for the party and got killed," said his cousin, Akhil.

Crime and forensic teams have visited the crime scene and lifted samples. The district DCP and additional DCP Joy Tirkey also recreated the possible sequence of events. But at the end of it, they didn't have a clear picture.

Anmol's friends and Pranel's father, K D Sharma, are being questioned to establish what happened inside the flat during the party and the aftermath. Pranel is a Hindu College student whose house Anmol and other friends had chosen to have a party at. Neighbours said Pranel's family, who are tenants, often had parties at their flat which was why they did not pay much attention to the commotion.

"We have registered a case of murder under section 302 of IPC and are investigating the matter. All angles are being probed. The cause of death will be ascertained only after the autopsy report. We expect a breakthrough soon and are questioning several people in this connection," said P Karunakaran, DCP southeast.

A team led by ACP and SHO of Kalkaji, with the Nehru Place chowki in-charge as a member, has been formed to crack the case. The cops said their priority was to get the medical and forensic reports which will take their probe in the right direction and strengthen their initial findings.
