Some activists, however, are disappointed that it took nine months to get justice in the case. "What hope do we have for speedy justice? There are thousands of women knocking at the courts and police stations, but they have no access to justice. Such cases have to be time-bound," said CPM leader and All India Democratic Women's Association patron, Brinda Karat.
Meanwhile, most activists have welcomed the conviction saying it will give confidence to women to approach the judiciary and the police. "After waiting for nine months, at least we know there is now a new law that women can use. The four convicts, however, were tried as per the old law. Their conviction will give many women confidence to fight sexual violence," said Annie Raja, general secretary of National Federation of Indian Women.
V Lenin Kumar, the last president of JNUSU who mobilized many students during the December 16 protests, said, "A lot of Justice Verma committee recommendations haven't been implemented. Those have to be done. We expect a strong sentence but we are against death penalty."
Former IPS officer, Kiran Bedi is expecting a very "severe" sentence. "There should be no compassion. The crime was beastly and there is no room for any kind of compassion. This case has worked because politicians, police, press, prosecution and courts have worked in tandem. Lets learn from it," she added.
