NOIDA: Friday's incident —where a woman was allegedly raped by five men, including two cops, at night—has once again thrown into focus the lack of women's safety in Noida and Greater Noida. This is despite the women's wing of the Gautam Budh Nagar police launching a self-defence programme in April to empower girl students and women. The latest crime has renewed urban families' anxiety for the safety of their womenfolk working and travelling in big cities.

"If policemen, who are the upholders of the law, are involved in crimes like rape, how can the women be safe," says a resident. "There is an urgent need for increased patrolling as well as social reforms to make our cities safer," says another resident.

Police data shows that GB Nagar has already registered 18 rape cases this year in sharp contrast with last year, which recorded a total of 19 rapes. The rape cases recorded in 2011, 2010, 2009 and 2008 were 21, 33, 20 and 19 respectively.

Police say they will increase their presence through patrolling and outposts besides deploying a greater number of women cops. "Isolated areas and undeveloped sectors having offices where women work in night shifts will be on the radar," said Preetinder Singh, SSP of GB Nagar. "BPOs, IT companies and residential sectors will be under watch. There will be dedicated PCR vans for ensure women's safety," Singh said.

Women constables attached to various police stations in Noida and Greater Noida will impart combat skills to students and reach out to homemakers through RWAs. Officials say they have imparted training to many women in Judo and other martial art forms through the programme and plan to expand its reach. The idea is to equip women to tackle unpleasant situations . "We want women and girls to be able to know what to do when faced with an assault, be it at the workplace, on the streets or even at home," said the SSP.

"The self-defence course has been designed to develop concepts and impart skills for helping women build their own selfprotection strategies," said ASP Shalini Singh, who is shepherding the programme. Police said women and girls are taught not to let things slide and teach a lesson to molesters.
