NEW DELHI: The dengue death toll in the capital reached three on Tuesday with two more succumbing to the disease at a private hospital in south Delhi. One of them was an ENT specialist in the same hospital.

"Both the patients were admitted to our hospital in serious condition. They had high fever and difficulty in breathing. The symptoms did not improve after medications. They finally succumbed due to multi-organ failure," said Dr Virendra Anand, senior consultant, internal medicine at Moolchand Medcity Hospital. He said that dengue was confirmed through NS1 antigen test in both the cases.

"The hospital staff is in complete shock. Our colleague was healthy a week ago. He was admitted to the hospital on September 3 with high fever, difficulty in breathing and rapidly falling platelet count. When his condition did not improve, he was shifted to the ICU. But he died," said a hospital doctor, who did not wish to be named.

A 22-year-old youth, domestic breeding checker with the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, had died due to dengue at Max Super Specialty Hospital in Shalimar Bagh on September 1.

The municipal corporation, however, maintains they have not received the records and so the official count for dengue remains 'zero' for this season.

According to the municipal corporation data, total 255 people were diagnosed with dengue till August 7 this year.

"There is a sudden spurt in dengue cases and the recent deaths point to the fact that all cases are not mild. Dehydration is the most common complication which aggravates the condition. Patients should be given enough fluid to control it," said Dr K K Aggarwal, senior physician and cardiologist at Moolchand Hospital.

The symptoms of dengue include high fever, rashes, vomiting and nausea. It is self-limiting and goes away with symptomatic treatment in most cases.

However, in some patients the symptoms are acute and they often present with rapid fall in platelet count. "One needs to be watchful for severities such as bleeding and drop in platelet count. Delay in medical attention can lead to emergency situation," said a senior doctor.
