Long wait for trains on Blue line

NEW DELHI: With a waiting period of 8-15 minutes between trains during off-peak hours, the Dwarka Sector 21-Noida/Vaishali corridor may be getting more commuters, but services seem to be suffering.

Over the past few weeks, commuters have been complaining about the increased waiting time between trains. "The frequency is usually less than two minutes when I catch the train from Rajouri Garden in the morning. However, I have to wait much longer for a train around 3.30-4pm. On Wednesday, I waited for 15 minutes for a train to Noida," said Moushumi Samajdar, a regular passenger. Samajdar, who is a student, says the frequency has been going down especially over the past few weeks.

Others travelling on the corridor have also been complaining. The wait is the longest between 12.30-3.30pm, which Delhi Metro calls "off-peak" hours. "Whenever I travel by the Metro in the afternoon, I have to wait at least 7-10 minutes for a train. Sometimes I have to wait longer than 10 minutes," said Rakesh Sinha, who also travels by the Blue line daily. "On Friday, the display board at the Dwarka Sector-14 station said the train would come after eight minutes. This happens regularly," he added.

The Dwarka Sector 21-Noida/Vaishali corridor is one of the most crowded lines on the network. The line carries over nine lakh passengers daily, and crossed the figure on August 8, when Delhi Metro recorded a ridership of 9.8 lakh.

Delhi Metro has been trying to manage the increasing ridership for some time now. On August 19, it introduced the first eight-coach train on to the corridor. At present, two such eight-coach trains run on the line. It has also been trying to convert the four-coach trains on the line into six-coach ones.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) plans to induct a total of 31 eight-coach trains on the Blue line, which it says it will introduce in a phased manner.
