The Delhi-Jaipur stretch of the highway, once a wonderful drive, is full of potholes, ceaseless construction and diversions. Once a mere four hour drive, it takes about seven hours now to reach Delhi from Pink City. TOI has been campaigning for toll to be suspended on the road.
In her letter, the governor has stressed on the importance of the road for tourist traffic on the Golden Triangle and for the movement of goods through Rajasthan but has described it as a "nightmare for vehicular traffic". On the explanation offered by NHAI for its inability to complete construction work due to delay by the government of Rajasthan in land acquisition, the governor has drawn the attention of the state government to the matter. The governor has also shot a letter to CK Mathew, chief secretary, appreciating its stand in Supreme Court of stopping toll tax on the road.
In her letter to the ministry, the governor has justified the public outcry of stopping toll on this stretch until the road is fully ready. "The Supreme Court has repeatedly stated that public authorities should sanction/charge toll tax from commuters for usage of roads/bridges only when they are fully operational and not damaged," the letter says. On the pending PIL at the Supreme Court she has expressed hope that the ministry will take a stance in keeping with public interest and not compel the government of Rajasthan to change its stand "as has been attempted %earlier".
The letter urges the minister to travel over the road to spend a quiet weekend in Rajasthan to understand the plight of commuters.
