Road secretary wins Gymkhana poll

NEW DELHI: Union road transport and highways secretary Vijay Chhibber won the coveted president's post in Gymkhana Club on early Saturday morning. He defeated his nearest rival former chief of R&AW A S Dulat by over 280 votes in a four-cornered election that took place on Friday evening.

The second ever woman candidate for this post Urmila Gupta, a retired Indian Information Services officer, came third in the contest while former director general of police B L Vohra finished fourth.

According to club members, this year recorded a maximum turn out of at least 2,200 votes. The club has about 5,600 voting members while the total number of member stands close to 12,000.

The club election in every two years becomes talk of the city because of its high profile members that includes several top serving and retired bureaucrats, defence officials and political leaders.

This year's election attracted maximum criticism as the candidates'supporters threw several cocktail parties and resorting to smear campaign against each other.
