Alim's accused sons, Danish and Anas, are reportedly absconding. Police suspect property dispute to be the reason behind the crime.
"Nadeem was arrested on Sunday from Shaheed Nagar area of east Delhi where he had come to meet his relative," said Sanjay Beniwal, joint commissioner of police (southeastern range).
Rehana (40) was stabbed in the back and her neck was slit twice after being shot. She was found lying in a pool of blood on October 9. Police found a live cartridge of 7.65mm from the spot. Rehana's autopsy report revealed a total of 12 stab wounds and 2 bullet injuries — one on the left side of her chest and one on her head — in her body.
As there was no sign of forceful entry and a glass of water was found in a tray on Rehana's table, police concluded that she could have known her killer. Suspicion fell on Danish (25) and Anas (23) as they were not present during Rehana's burial. Their cellphones were also found to be switched off.
Danish was not in good terms with Alim and had left the family to run his business. He reportedly partnered with one Arif and ran slaughter houses in Lucknow and Bulandshahr. Nadeem worked for Arif but drove the Tata Safari — registered under the MLA's name — which was reportedly used by Danish during the murder. The brothers had reportedly offered Rs 5 lakh to Nadeem to aide them in the murder. Since Anas is disabled, police say that he could not have helped his brother in committing the crime but could be present during the murder.
Danish was reportedly miffed with his father for handing over the charge of most his properties to Rehana, Alim's third wife. Investigators revealed that Rehana even looked after Alim's political engagements and was considered a family favourite. Police are now probing if Danish's mother, Kamar Jahan, is also involved in the incident. Jahan was the first wife of the 53-year old MLA and had fallen out with him.
"We are on the trail of the other two accused and are trying to piece together the roles of other people in the family, including Kamar Jahan," said V V Chaudhary, additional commissioner of police (north-east).
