Doctors continue stir on Day 2

NEW DELHI: With the doctor's strike continuing for a second consecutive day on Thursday, patient services were affected at Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini. Over 200 resident doctors are still on strike to protest the manhandling of a colleague by the attendants of a patient.

The doctors had stopped work on Tuesday night when the relatives of a patient -who had dengue symptoms and died - allegedly roughed up a resident doctor posted in the emergency ward of the hospital.

"The patient's condition was serious. Her vital parameters - including platelet count - was very low. We could not save her but there was no medical negligence," said a doctor, demanding that the accused in the case be arrested immediately.

The authorities must put in place better security system to prevent repetition of any such incident. Just a fortnight ago, a lady doctor was manhandled by patient's attendants at Lok Nayak hospital, the doctor added.

"This is deplorable. We have written to Delhi's chief minister and the commissioner of police seeking urgent action in the matter. If no action is taken, doctors across the country will go on protest," said Dr Narender Saini, secretary general of the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
