Additional sessions judge Umed Singh Grewal awarded life term, the minimum punishment for the offence of murder, to Haryana resident Pramod saying there was no allegation against him that he acted with cruelty.
The court, however, acquitted two others, Satbir and Shailender, who were also accused in the case holding that the Delhi Police failed to prove any circumstance against them.
The court said police successfully proved the motive of 30-year-old Pramod for killing Anil Puri with whom his wife Pooja had got married.
"Body of Anil was recovered on the lead given by accused Pramod. It was he who talked to victim last and thereafter the mobile phone of the deceased went switched off. Recovery of dead body at the instance of Pramod is a big circumstance.
"Pramod had married Pooja in 2007 and it is no secret that Pooja later on became wife of Anil. Pooja and Pramod are residents of the same village. He had very strong motive to kill Anil in order to get Pooja again," the judge said.
According to the prosecution, on October 3, 2008, Anil's father lodged a missing complaint of his son with the police and after scanning the victim's mobile call records, Pramod was investigated as he had last talked to him.
Pramod was arrested on the basis of disclosure statement after Anil's body was recovered from a drain in Ashok Vihar.
Police said Pramod had confessed his crime that he murdered Anil with a sharp object. During investigation, the two others were also arrested.
The prosecution had told the court that Pramod had an affair with Pooja and married her. Without a divorce from Pramod, she married Anil, so the accused had every reason to kill the victim so that she may return to him, it said.
Pramod had sought leniency saying he is the only bread earner in the family and has to support his ailing parents.
