NEW DELHI: In yet another road rage incident in the city, the cricket coach of Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, was arrested for allegedly firing two shots after an argument with three teenagers on a bike who had taken a long time in giving him way, police said.

The teens got away unharmed and noted the last four digits of the coach's car - a Honda CRV - enabling the station house officer of Defence Colony police station to track him down. The accused was identified as Randhir Singh, 38, a former Ranji player from Haryana. He told police he had fired in the air in self-defence.

The empty cartridge matching the make of Randhir's licensed pistol nailed him. The pistol has been recovered along with three live cartridges. The weapon's licence was issued from Jind in Haryana and police have written to the Jind district magistrate to revoke it.

Randhir has been coaching at DPS Mathura Road for the last eight years and has also been associated with Don Bosco School, a senior police officer said.

A case under section 336 (Act endangering other's life), rash driving (279) of IPC and sections of Arms Act has been registered.

The incident occurred at around 2am on Tuesday when Randhir was returning to his Jangpura home. When he crossed the Moti Bagh flyover, his car got behind a bike on which three youths were travelling. The youths were going towards Kalkaji temple.

Randhir allegedly got enraged with the bikers for not giving him way and and waylaid them after crossing the flyover. The youths in their complaint said Randhir yelled at them and asked them to come to his car. The youths pulled over and went to his CRV. An argument ensued after which the former cricketer reportedly whipped out his pistol, fired twice and drove away.

The youths noted down the last four digits, 5140, of the CRV and gave it to the police. A source said DCP south B S Jaiswal formed a team led by SHO Defence Colony Kuldeep Singh who began to trace the vehicle owner. Singh found that the vehicle had been registered in Narwana and the owner lived in Jangpura.

A trap was laid and the accused was arrested on Wednesday after he came to Nizamuddin to have breakfast. He was produced before a magistrate.

The cops plan to slap harsh sections of law against people indulging in road rage. Recently, a Congolese national was shot dead by a local businessman over parking in Dwarka, southwest Delhi. Two DU students were arrested for stabbing a lawyer in Hauz Khas a few days ago. Two months ago, a Pakistani diplomat was manhandled in Vasant Vihar.
