According to the police, Chawla, a former basketball star from Hindu College, used a simple but audacious stunt to swindle jewellery showrooms in the Capital. He would allegedly call them up posing as the personal secretary of a prominent political leader, and tell them about the impending visit of his chief security officer.
Investigations revealed that Chawla would then arrive in his SUV fitted with a red beacon and a few musclemen posing as PSOs. The rest of the act made for perfect theatre. Chawla, say the police, made it a point to take his wife, Monika, and their three-year-old daughter along on these missions. Once at the showroom, they allege, he would wander around dropping names and facts about his fake Akbar Road address. A Bluetooth earpiece fixed to his ears, he would bark "instructions" about next day's engagements.
Chawla would then allegedly pick up expensive jewellery worth several lakhs but offer to pay with a cheque. Gullible jewelers often happily agreed. By the time the cheque bounced, the imposter would be miles away.
Chawla's game began unravelling when he reportedly duped a Vasant Vihar jeweller of around Rs 5 lakh. DCP (south) B S Jaiswal formed a special team under inspector Anil Sharma to crack the case. This jeweller had found the account closed when he deposited the cheque. A case was registered and Sharma and ACP Ramesh Chander began investigating.
After extensive technical surveillance and rounds of verification in Delhi and NCR, Sharma managed to track down a childhood friend of the accused in southwest Delhi. Based on the information furnished by him, traps were laid and test calls were made. Responding to these, Chawla's accomplice, Rajesh, claimed to be in Faridabad but his mobile location was traced to Juhu in Mumbai.
At midnight, three teams flew to Mumbai. A door-to-door search was carried out in Juhu in the early hours which finally yielded results. Chawla was pinned down at Hotel Sun and Sand where too he was pretending to be the security in-charge of a political bigwig. He was arrested with his accomplice, Rajesh (26), who allegedly posed as his driver and helped him in all the operations, getting him SIM cards and calling up the targets.
It now transpires that the team was involved in more than 20 incidents. Jewellery worth only around Rs 2 lakh has been recovered so far from them. The rest of the booty is reported to have been deposited in a finance company in Chandigarh. The cash has been deposited in a bank in Chandigarh. Both accounts have been frozen.
Chawla has told the cops that he had shifted to Mohali in Punjab six months ago and flew down to Delhi only on the weekends. He told them that he planned to target jewelers at Mumbai's Sarafa bazar. Chawla, say the police, is also an accused in two cases of criminal intimidation and impersonating a joint commissioner of Delhi Police.
