Jams after road near Ashram flyover caves in

NEW DELHI: Snarls were reported from near the Lajpat Nagar-Ashram flyover after a portion of the road caved in on Friday morning. Jams were also reported near Moolchand Hospital since large vehicles had to be diverted.

"Buses and trucks were diverted to avoid further damage on the stretch," said a senior traffic official. Commuters travelling towards Noida complained of slow moving traffic in the morning rush hour as the effected of the cave-in rippled down to the road below the Moolchand flyover.

"It took me over half an hour to cross that stretch. Traffic was moving at snail's pace," said Amit, who works at a private firm in Noida.

A PWD official said that part of the road sunk in due to the shifting of a slab under the road. "There is a chamber beneath the road through which a pipe passes. A slab covers this chamber. During an inspection on Friday, we realized that there was a one foot deep depression in the road. The slab may have shifted due to the weight of traffic," the official said.

However, by Friday evening, PWD officials managed to replaced the slab covering the chamber and fix the affected portion of the road. "The affected part of the road was along the median. Traffic continued on two lanes while repair work was carried out," said an official.
