Police said there were several smaller accidents that were not reported. They added that most of the accidents took place as it is difficult to judge the exact distance of a vehicle from its back-lights when dense fog restricts clear vision to a few metres.
Traffic police officers said the directives issued to drivers notwithstanding, people fail to exercise precaution and take protective measures on a foggy night, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
They claimed that sufficient traffic cops had been deployed to deal with fog-related emergencies.
Drivers said the lights in several areas on Ring Road and other major roads of the capital were so dim that it became impossible to discern the carriageways and road dividers.
"I had my headlights on but could not see anything ahead," said Siddharth, a resident of Srinivaspuri in south Delhi. He added that there were also points on Ring Road where the markers were absent, putting commuters at risk.
Experts said that during foggy nights the dark stretches of the roads are the most vulnerable as the turns are not visible even with headlights on. Cops have identified 1,200 dark spots with most of them on the road to the airport.
"We have deployed men wearing reflector jackets and glowing batons to streamline traffic during foggy nights," said a traffic cop.
