According to a press statement issued by Uttar Banga Ban-Jan Shromojivi Manch, the forest department staff and JFMC ( Joint Forest Management Committee) along with police had come to the area on December 23, 25 and January 7 to fell trees that were marked by them earlier.
The North Khairbari area adjoins the forests of Chilapata and Jaldapara National Park, a crucial wildlife habitat and an area where indigenous forest communities of Dooars have been living.
According to All India Forum of Forest Movements (AIFFM), North Khairbari forests form part of a crucial wild life corridor traditionally used by wild elephants: any tampering with existing vegetation can aggravate man-elephant conflict in the area. Herds of wild elephants have been using Khairbari forests in recent months, and man-elephant conflict incidents are on the rise in that area.
Uttar Banga Ban Jan Shromojivi demands that forest department immediately suspend their CFC operations in Khairbari forests and do not start new CFCs in any other forests over which communities have a claim.
They also urged the West Bengal government to initiate due process to recognize forest rights including rights over community forest resource.
