Funded by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, the study aims to "provide accurate cryosphere cover in the Himalayan study regions and provide impact assessment of climate change on the society."
According to Bharat H Desai of JNU, who is the coordinator of the Inter-University Consortium, said that Jammu University and University of Kashmir will study the upper range of Himalayas whereas Sikkim University is engaged in gathering information on the North-East range. The initial report submitted to the DST is a study of melting and freezing of more than 12 glaciers. Sample taken from the glaciers is being investigated in the laboratory.
"Four state of the art laboratories were being set up where at present the ice samples collected from the glaciers are being studied. University of Kashmir got a grant of Rs 8.5 crore, followed by Rs 4.5 crore for Jammu University and Rs 3.5 crore for JNU. The study seeks to provide impact assessment of climate change on the society, the scientific and environmental impact. Also we would like to study the pattern of massive destruction cause by flooding of rivers. The data is aimed at helping understanding the glaciers better for national policy," said Desai.
Going beyond the local socio-economic impact and national policy, Desai said that in the long run the research is likely to include international issues in its ambit. "Issues like national security linked to manipulation of the glaciers by neighbouring country to create mass destruction in India could be further extension of the research where creation of an alert system would be looked into."
As per the memorandum of understanding between the universities, the research objectives are to standardization of mapping cryosphere in the Himalayas, standardization in measurement and assessment of mass balance of benchmark glaciers and cryospheric regions within national boundary, in field measurement of climatic parameters, palaeo-climatic reconstruction for better understanding of magnitude and frequency of past climate and future modeling, impact of snow cover and cryosphere changes, river regime and society.
