NEW DELHI: A new trend in gold smuggling may be emerging at IGI airport. Over the past few weeks, smugglers are using the airport as a transit point to exchange the cache among themselves. The customs department on Thursday caught 4.5 kilos of smuggled gold that was changing hands between two parties at the airport on Thursday.
Two people who boarded a flight from Bangkok to Delhi on their way to Kathmandu were caught handing over gold jewellery to a person scheduled to fly to Hyderabad. The whole consignment of 4.5 kilos was being smuggled through the Delhi airport. "The travelling patterns of these people raised our suspicion. For someone bound from Bangkok to Kathmandu it wouldn't make sense to travel through Delhi," said a senior customs official. TNN
