AAP-BJP slugfest during tribute to freedom fightersÂ

NEW DELHI: A function to commemorate the death anniversary of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh turned into a political battlefield in Sector 5 of Rohini on Sunday. AAP's Rakhi Birla, who was doing rounds of the area, got an enthusiastic reception at the venue. A number of people, including BJP MLA Kulwant Rana, garlanded for form's sake. But, before Rakhi could address the public, Rana took the stage and held forth on the achievements of BJP since Independence, the role played by ex-PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, referring to themselves as "true Indians".

After a tribute to Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on their 83rd death annviverary, Rana's tone became political. "The country is being divided on the basis of caste, creed and religion. This has become a dangerous trend ... even outsiders are trying to invade the country. Only the BJP is truly Indian and can strengthen the very chord of India and keep the nation together," he said. There was some discontent among the audience. As organizers clarified the function was not a political platform for aspiring candidates, all eyes turned towards the AAP leader. A Rajasthani dance performance was halted so that Rakhi, who was in a hurry to attend other meetings, could speak.

"I know this is not a political platform but it has just been turned into one,'' she said. She then paid her respects to the martyrs and promised to honour their memory and the legacy they left behind. "What happened after Independence might have freed us physically but mentally we are still not free. Issues like corruption, inflation and violence still plague our society. When women step out, their families worry about their security. They need to know they will be safe. If we want to progress, we have to change our mindset ... and learn to differentiate between what is genuine and what is not. We have to honour the sacrifice made by our freedom fighters,'' she said.
