Police said the family of Priyanka Kumari (22) had learnt about 25-year-old Mohit Kumar's alcohol problem and called off their marriage which drove him to commit the crime. "Mohit was arrested in Dadri on Tuesday afternoon," DCP (Southwest) Suman Goel said. A case of murder has been registered. Police may add to the FIR clauses pertaining to sexual assault if the post mortem report confirms rape.
The murder came to light on Monday morning when the room service employee informed the manager that guests of room number 5 were not responding to calls. He had peeped in through the hatch above the door and seen a body on the bed. Mayank, the manager of the guesthouse, said, "Mohit had checked in around 8pm on Saturday with Priyanka. They claimed to be a newlywed couple from Haryana."
Mohit left the guesthouse around 11.30 on Sunday night and even asked for directions to a sweet shop in the area from hotel employees. He was arrested from a relative's house.
Speaking to TOI, Priyanka's family members said she had been working for Delhi Traffic Police since 2010 and was posted in Dwarka courts. "The marriage had been fixed three months ago through a family friend. Mohit's family claimed he was a naval officer and posted in Goa drawing a handsome salary. When we found out he had been dismissed and was an alcoholic to boot, we decided to call off the marriage," Priyanka's brother, Praveen, said.
Family members claimed that Mohit reached their house in Sagarpur when Priyanka was alone and coerced her to accompany him threatening to shoot her kin if she did not.
