PWD and cops give rude jolt to slow down traffic

NEW DELHI: People driving from Chirag Dilli towards Sunder Nagar on Saturday bumped into two raised strips at the bottom of Moolchand flyover and Oberoi flyover which looked like some patch-up job. It has actually turned out to be PWD and traffic police's idea of a speed breaker, and commuters aren't amused.

It's a one-and-a-half-inch thick strip of bitumen laid at the base of these flyovers, and several more across the city, to slow down traffic and help pedestrians in crossing the road. They are not painted or marked and, as a result, you can't see them from a distance. Also, their edges are not rounded. So, a car's tyres just crash into them.
"These are not your usual speed breakers," said a harassed Sudhir Singh as he stopped by to inspect the one at the Oberoi. "These are quite strange and inconvenient. The strip is quite high and the vehicle does not move smoothly over it. It could easily lead to an accident because the cars abruptly stop on reaching there."

PWD sources said that this had been done at the instance of the traffic police, who had said that the traffic exiting flyovers needs to be slowed down to enable people to cross the road. "The traffic police had been asking for these speed breakers for a long time. Their edges will be rounded off in the next few days and they will also be painted," said a senior PWD official.

He said that usually three strips are needed to act as speed breakers but PWD was experimenting with just one. "We will see how it works and the traffic police will tell us whether it was a successful experiment or not," he added.

At some other flyovers, PWD has used thermoplastic paint. "The paint has been thickened and applied in strips. This is not a speed breaker but works at the psychological level. Drivers would think that there is a speed breaker there and slow down," said another official.

All these years, speed breakers have not been standardized in the city. Somewhere there are those irritating rumble-strips which go on and on, and at other places these are so high that often they scrape the undercarriage of cars. Civic officials have also failed to deter residents in many colonies from constructing their own speed breakers. At many places, however, the traffic anyway slows down because of the condition of the roads.
